OVSA data products, which include microwave data obtained by the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) and metric-decametric solar data obtained by the Owens Valley Radio Observatory’s Long Wavelength Array (OVRO-LWA), are open to all scientists and the general public. Although we have an open data policy, the continued availability of OVSA data relies on the proper acknowledgment of data and personnel support by its users. Guidelines for OVSA data usage and publication policy are as follows:

Contacting the OVSA team

While OVSA has an open data use policy (i.e., prior permission to access and analyze the data is not required), the data can be subject to limitations that are not immediately evident to users, and at times, the analysis and interpretation of the data involve more in-depth processing. Therefore, we encourage OVSA data users to contact OVSA PI Bin Chen (binchen [at] njit.edu) with a short description of their study and the data products that they intend to use. Contacting the PI near the start of your project will allow us to:

  • Direct the user to the OVSA team member(s) who can offer assistance in processing and/or interpreting the data.
  • Alert of any instrumental effects that could result in misinterpretation of OVSA data products.

Publications: Acknowledgment, Citation, and Authorship

All publications that use OVSA data should include a statement in the Acknowledgments section with something like: "EOVSA was designed, built, and is now operated by the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) as a community facility. The OVRO-LWA expansion project was supported by NSF under grant AST-1828784. EOVSA and OVRO-LWA solar operations are supported by NSF grant AGS-2436999 to NJIT." If your work only utilizes EOVSA or OVRO-LWA data, you may adjust the language accordingly. Because these grant numbers change from time to time, please check back on this page for updates.

Authors are asked to:

  • For papers utilizing EOVSA data, cite the EOVSA first result paper, Gary et al. 2018, “Microwave and Hard X-Ray Observations of the 2017 September 10 Solar Limb Flare,” ApJ, 863, 83 (DOI; NASA/SAO ADS). [An EOVSA instrument paper and a pipeline processing paper are being prepared, which will be updated on this page.]
  • For papers utilizing OVRO-LWA data, cite the OVRO-LWA solar science overview and pipeline/data product papers. (Links to these references will be provided after they are published. Please check back.)
  • Invite OVSA team member(s) responsible for collecting/curating the data as a co-author. Specifically, for data collected after October 8, 2024, invite the OVSA Scientist-on-Duty of the day as a co-author. For data collected before October 8, 2024, consult OVSA PI for authorship suggestions.
  • Provide OVSA PI Bin Chen (binchen [at] njit.edu) with a link to a copy of any papers that include OVSA data upon submission and again upon publication.

Additionally, for publications that involve more advanced data processing aided by OVSA team member(s) or use special observing modes:

  • Invite OVSA team member(s) in the author list who a) helped process/interpret the data and/or b) helped plan the observations.
